The sharp increase in the ratio from 32.94% in 2025 to 40.23% in 2026 can be viewed in the context of the sector’s changing balance-sheet dynamics during FY2025–26. The increase was broadly driven by contraction in the loan portfolio alongside a strengthening of the equity base. As portfolio size moderated, equity’s relative weight in the overall financial structure increased. At the same time, the sector could also mobilise significant fresh equity amounting to ₹2,554 crore in FY 2026.

This combination of a reduced portfolio and increased equity resulted in a northward movement of the ratio. The movement therefore reflects a change in the denominator and capital strengthening by institutions. But this trend was concentrated mostly in larger NBFC-MFIs.
